Our Founder, Jared S. Taylor had the opportunity to chat with Yoni Shtein, Co-Founder and CEO at Laguna Health during HLTH 2024.
Jared S. Taylor: Yoni, it’s great to have you here. How has Laguna Health evolved since we last spoke two years ago?
Yoni Shtein: Thanks for having me, Jared. Over the past two years, we’ve been refining our understanding of care management from both clinical and technological perspectives. This led us to develop the “Laguna Companion,” an AI-powered copilot solution. It’s designed to enhance care management teams’ efficiency and consistency without requiring changes to their workflows, clinical models, or technology stacks. By meeting the market where it is, we’ve created a solution that empowers professionals without disruption.
Jared S. Taylor: The term “copilot” has become more mainstream with the rise of AI. Can you explain how your copilot works and why it’s impactful?
Yoni Shtein: Absolutely. Our copilot integrates seamlessly into existing systems—whether it’s CRM, telephony, or other tools. This avoids the long replacement cycles associated with traditional solutions and allows us to deliver value quickly.
Unlike most AI tools that focus on provider-side challenges like summarizing patient interactions, we’re addressing payer-side needs. Our copilot offers real-time support to care managers, helping them navigate complex systems and deliver better outcomes without changing their existing workflows.
Jared S. Taylor: The ambient listening space has seen significant attention recently. What differentiates Laguna’s work in this crowded field?
Yoni Shtein: Most of the activity in this space has been provider-focused, but payer organizations have their own unique needs that haven’t been addressed. Laguna Health has spent years optimizing for the payer side, which allows us to deliver solutions that are deeply aligned with their challenges.
Strategically, we’re focused on becoming a profound efficiency enhancer for payer organizations through conversational AI. While many provider-facing tools are evolving toward revenue cycle management (RCM), our focus is on empowering care managers to work more effectively within their current systems.
Jared S. Taylor: When pitching Laguna Health, how do you tailor your message for customers, investors, and partners?
Yoni Shtein: For customers, we emphasize the care manager’s experience. Care managers are overwhelmed by cognitive load—juggling multiple systems while trying to stay empathetic. Our copilot streamlines their workflows by handling administrative tasks, offering real-time insights, and improving efficiency by 29%, which provides significant ROI.
For investors, we focus on the timing. Rising costs and economic pressures mean organizations can’t simply hire more staff to address challenges. GenAI is becoming the solution of choice, and our focus on the payer side positions us uniquely in a growing market.
For partners like Shearwater, the world’s largest clinical solutions provider, we highlight how our real-time AI support enhances consistency and allows clinicians to operate at the top of their license. It’s a win-win partnership that creates higher-value outcomes for everyone involved.
Jared S. Taylor: What excites you most about being at HLTH this year?
Yoni Shtein: HLTH is an incredible opportunity to connect with customers, investors, partners, and prospects all in one place. The industry has evolved significantly, and the value pockets are much clearer now than they were a few years ago.
AI for payer organizations is one of the hottest areas right now, and it’s exciting to showcase what we’ve built at Laguna Health. This event is a chance to strengthen relationships and explore new collaborations that will shape the future of care management.
Jared S. Taylor: Thank you, Yoni, for sharing your insights.
Yoni Shtein: Thank you, Jared. It’s always great to have these conversations and share what we’re building at Laguna Health.
